Théo Metais is a French Berlin-based contemporary painter whose work explores themes of journey, impermanence, and inner transformation. Informed by a decade-long career as a film journalist, his visual language draws on the narrative power of cinema and the expressive potential of painting, illustration and comic book. Working primarily with a limited color palette, he employs charcoal, oil paint, ink and various printmaking techniques to reinterpret photographs into compositions that merge figuration and landscape.
His distinctive use of motion, blur, and restraint of color evokes a cinematic sense of memory and transience. Through this process, his paintings capture fleeting psychological states and the quiet absurdity of human experience. In his recent works, he turns toward caricature, cartooning, and the grotesque as vehicles for exploring inner vulnerability, blending irony with empathy to navigate the delicate threshold between the absurd and the profound.
Currently an artist-in-residence at GlogauAIR (Berlin), Théo Metais has exhibited in independent art spaces including Art Space in Exile (2024), Studio4000 (2025), and Backhaus Projects (2025).
