Théo Métais (b. 1991, Niort, France) is a Berlin-based contemporary painter whose work explores themes of journey, impermanence, and inner transformation. His visual storytelling has been shaped by a decade of experience as a movie journalist. Through a refined use of monochrome, charcoal, and oil paint, he brings together influences from cinema, painting, and illustration to reinterpret photographs taken during many car journeys with his father. In doing so, he revisits the world through the eyes of a child, inviting the viewer to symbolically occupy the passenger seat—a space of contemplation. The small format further accentuates the intimacy of the scene, offering a subtle meditation on memory, movement, and the passage of time.
He is currently an artist-in-residence at Burnt Sienna Art School. His work will be exhibited at Backhaus Projects in a group show this September, followed by a duo exhibition in October.
